LinkAnother successful, wintery night at the acadia cafe! the night opened with the mesmerizing sounds of Eddy Burke, "a folk musician with a wit that could cut precious stones and fingers that could lacerate his own strings. " Eddy warmed us up with some intimate quiet songs, then got hollerin at the end, right in time for the second set of the sans souci quartet, where tables got pushed to the side to make room for some riverside ave passer-bys who came into stomp and dance. the night was closed by an impressive, rich vocal solo set by multi-talented local man javier trejo.

They played two great sets, giving us at the Acadia a peek into their new CD. Opening the night was a stripped-down version of Six Mile Grove, featuring Brandon Sampson and Barry Nelson. Closing the evening was the Mark Thomas Stockert Band. It was a big day for KFAI - the 30th Anniversary party!, so this final ambient set was perfect. The evening was hosted by KFAI's Jackson Buck.

July 12 - Sneaky Pete Bauer and John Stowell

This evening featured "Sneaky" Pete Bauer and John Stowell of Loudray. Hailing from a strong blues, roots and americana musical background, Sneaky Pete Bauer strives to connect the songs and styles that not too many people know about anymore. His shows are a combination of stripped-down instrumentation, field holler energy, and dry humor.

Jon Stowell sings the songs he's written, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Sometimes he does this with his band LOUDRAY, or in his other band Vinyl Wine. This time around he'll be going solo, playing songs that often deal with those two most mysterious and gripping topics in life: Whiskey & Women. This evening was hosted by KFAI's Jackson Buck.

June 28 - Bill Geezy CD Release, Dean Harrington Trio

Bill Geezy was back with a new CD and *KFAI's Roots Music Saturday" celebrated with a CD Release Party at the Acadia Cafe on Saturday, June 28! From his days performing on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion as a member of Stoney Lonesome Bluegrass Band to the present, Bill has been compiling a large catalogue of his handcrafted, American, countrified, folk-rock songs. On the Hoffman guitar that his mother bought him for a high school graduation present Bill has penned songs that have become the stuff that dreams are made of.

Bill's songs have been:

  • Performed on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion
  • Been included on an album of children's songs, which also featured Suzzy Roche of the incomparable Roches.
  • Recorded by Kate MacKenzie and EmmyLou Harris
  • Nominated for a Grammy
  • Published in internationally acclaimed folk magazine SING OUT!

Bills songs tap into a well of emotions that range from seriously sentimental to whimsically sarcastic.
Appealing to a wide range of audiences, whether you're seven or seventy Bill's songs feel comfortable the first time you hear them and grow on you more and more with each time you listen.
And there's no doubt about it these songs will stand the test of time!

June 14 - Bernie Gibbs King, Dave Babb

KFAI's Pam Hill, from Tuesday morning's Pam Without Boundaries hosted this evening of evening of roots music at the Acadia Cafe on June 14.

Bernie Gibbs King and Dave Babb (from the Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs) will be the featured performers at this edition of KFAI's Roots Music Night.

Bernie King performs original americana/roots music in styles that have been compared to Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, and Greg Brown. He's been called the "unholy love child of Steve Earle and Bob Dylan".

Dave Babb is songwriter, guitarist and singer with the Front Porch Swingin' Liquor Pigs. Additionally, he often plays with Steve Kaul of the Brass Kings, Baby Grant Johnson, and Jon Rodine. Dave was born angry, but life's hardscrabble lessons eventually made him embittered. The "Pope of Friday Night" has managed to channel his rage into productive ventures. Like futile vehicle repairs. And writing songs. And singing and playing his guitar.
